Common DNS record types

Each type of DNS record has its own job, and knowing the differences helps you understand what happens when you change one.

The types you will meet most

Four main kinds of records cover most of what any project needs. Our team sets them up as your project requires.

A quick guide

  • An A record connects the domain directly to the server's numeric address.
  • A CNAME record makes a subdomain point to another name.
  • An MX record says which server receives the email.
  • A TXT record carries checking data, such as email authentication and proof of ownership.
