Definition

UTM parameters are short tags you add to the end of a link. They do one job. They tell your reporting tool where each visitor came from, so when someone buys you can see which advert, email or post sent them.

A tagged link is simply longer than a normal one. After the address comes a question mark, then pieces like utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign. Source is the place the link sits, such as facebook or newsletter. Medium is the kind of traffic, such as email or paid social. Campaign is the name you gave the push, such as ramadan-sale. Those three cover most small businesses. Two more, utm_term and utm_content, matter only when you run several versions of the same advert and need to tell them apart.

The tags are worth exactly as much as your naming. Reporting tools read Facebook, facebook and FaceBook as three separate sources, so one campaign splits into three small rows and every one of them looks like a failure. Choose lowercase. Use hyphens instead of spaces. Write the rule on one page and keep it where the whole team can reach it. Agencies get this wrong more often than shop owners do.

Now the part nobody warns you about. A customer copies your tagged link and drops it into a family group chat. Everyone who clicks is counted as coming from the advert you paid for, and the campaign reads better than it really was. The opposite happens too. Some apps and privacy tools cut the tags off a link, and a genuine sale lands in the pile marked direct, where good traffic quietly disappears. Adding tags to links inside your own site causes a third problem, because it restarts the visit and erases the original source.

That does not make the tags useless. It makes them a guide rather than a court record. Read the shape of the numbers across several weeks and never trust a single day. When Linkysoft builds a web application we store the campaign name on the order itself, not only on the visit. That one change answers the question an owner actually asks, which is not how many people clicked but which advert paid for itself. The digital marketing team at Linkysoft fixes the naming rule before any money is spent, because one clean month beats a messy year.

Questions about UTM Parameters

Do I need UTM parameters if I only advertise on Facebook?
Yes. Every platform counts the sales it thinks it caused and tends to flatter itself. Tagged links let your own reports count the same sales separately, and the two numbers rarely match.
Will a long tagged link put customers off?
Some people do notice it. Use a short link or a QR code that points at the tagged address. The tags still arrive in your reports while the visitor only sees something tidy.
Does upper and lower case matter in a UTM tag?
It matters a lot. Reporting tools treat Facebook and facebook as two different sources, so one campaign shows up as two half-sized rows. Write everything in lowercase and never change your mind.
Should I put UTM tags on links between pages of my own site?
No. It starts a fresh visit and wipes out where the person first came from. Keep the tags for links that live somewhere other than your own website.
How long does a UTM tag keep getting credit for a sale?
The tag itself travels only with that one click. Your reporting tool then decides how long it remembers the source, often thirty or ninety days, so a slow buyer can end up credited to nothing at all.
