Upselling
Upselling is offering a customer a better or bigger version of what they already chose, at the moment they have decided but have not yet paid.
Also known as upsell trading up bigger basket offer
Definition
Upselling is offering the better version of what the customer has already chosen. They pick the small coffee and you offer the large one. They put the cheaper phone in the basket and you show the one that holds twice as many photos. Offering something alongside instead, like a case with the phone, is usually called cross selling. Same idea, pointed in a different direction.
Timing decides everything. The offer works after the customer has decided, not while they are still choosing. In a shop that moment is at the counter. Online it is the basket page, the step just before payment, or the thank-you screen after the order is placed. An offer dropped into the middle of a product list does not sell a bigger item. It only makes the page harder to read.
Doing it without losing the buyer is duller than most advice suggests. One offer, not three. Keep the extra price under about a third of what is already in the basket. Put the reason in the same sentence, because the reason is what sells, not the discount. The bigger bag fits a laptop. And leave an obvious way to say no. A window that covers the pay button is the fastest way to empty a basket.
Here is the number almost nobody watches. An upsell can lift the average order by eight percent and quietly cost you twelve percent of your finished checkouts, and the shop never notices, because the two figures live in different reports. Linkysoft puts both on one screen before any offer goes live. If completed orders fall, the offer is wrong, however good the extra money looks.
Storek lets the owner set those basket offers product by product and switch one off in seconds when the numbers turn. Wording matters more than placement, and the digital marketing side is where Linkysoft tests two versions of the same sentence against real orders. If you sell to businesses, the idea belongs in the quote rather than the basket, and that usually means a small web application instead of a shop setting. Start with your three best sellers. If the better version will not sell there, it will not sell anywhere.
