Definition

Google Search Console is a free tool from Google that shows how your site behaves in search results. It does not push you higher, it only reports what has already happened. Every site owner should have it, connecting it takes about ten minutes, and almost everything useful in it sits in three numbers.

Impressions count how often a link to your site appeared in a search result, and clicks count how many people chose it. Average position tells you roughly where your link sat, so the three only mean something read together. A page with many impressions and almost no clicks is being seen and ignored. That usually means the blue headline and the grey line under it do not answer the search.

The other half of the tool is index coverage, where Google lists the pages it stored and the ones it skipped. It gives a plain reason for each, and the reasons are dull but very useful. The page sends visitors elsewhere, a tag asks Google to stay away, or Google has not visited yet. A page that is not stored cannot appear in search, so an owner can write for months while one forgotten setting hides half the site.

Almost everyone is surprised that these numbers never match their analytics, because the two tools count different things. Search Console counts what happened inside Google, before the visit, while analytics counts what happened on the site, after it. Search Console also groups very rare searches together to protect privacy, so small figures are close rather than exact. One tool is the doorway and the other is the room.

Before any of that, you have to prove the site is yours, and that step is called verification. You upload a small file Google gives you, add one line to the domain settings, or let the site carry a hidden tag. Whoever built the site can do it in minutes, and Linkysoft finishes every website design and development project this way. The account is opened in the client's name, never ours, so ask your supplier for that in writing.

One habit is worth building from the start. Find the searches where you already sit at the bottom of page one, and improve those pages before you write anything new. It is cheaper than chasing new words, and the reader gets a better answer. Linkysoft puts that check into every digital marketing plan, because it turns a free report into work someone can start on Monday morning.

Questions about Google Search Console

Does Google Search Console cost anything?
No. It is free for every site, with no limit on pages or traffic. You only need a Google account and a way to prove the site belongs to you.
Why does Search Console show fewer clicks than my analytics shows visits?
Because they measure different moments. Search Console counts only the clicks that started in Google. Your analytics counts every visit, including people who typed the address or came from a link somewhere else.
How do I prove that the website is mine?
You upload a small file Google gives you, add one line to your domain settings, or place a hidden tag in the site's code. Any one of the three is enough, and it takes minutes.
How long before it shows data?
Data starts on the day you connect it and appears after a day or two. It cannot show you the months before that, which is a good reason to set it up on the day the site goes live.
My page is not in Google at all. What do I check first?
Open index coverage and search for the address. Google will name the reason, usually a redirect, a tag that blocks it, or a page it has not visited yet. Fix that reason before writing anything new.
